じゆう - 自由 - 자유 - FREEdom in the 8th world

Of late the theme of freedom has been bugging me ...

When was the last time you truly felt free ?

Free to speak your mind ? without hesitation !

Free to fart in no one's presence ? with much relief ! (pardon the crass comparison here)

Free to love whomever you wanted ? with reckless abandon !

Free to do whatever you loved ? whatever your heart desires !

Free to be yourself ? dress in any way you want, walk any way you feel like !

Free to catch the next flight to wherever it may be ? mighty glad to be alive and living life !

BE WHO YOU ARE, WHO YOU WANNABE!

Watching Jim Carrey's latest comedy - YES MAN definitely set the tone for "what if''s" and "what nots" ? in life. His other films like THE MASK, BRUCE ALMIGHTY also play with the theme of uncovering your heart's innermost desires and what kind of hell/heaven might break loose!

Got my hands on the last copy of MISIA'S "EIGHTH WORLD" live concert DVD at HMV yesterday ! As the screen pans towards the massive audience and their entranced gazes towards the diva onstage, I can't help but feel their spirits soar together in that consolidated silence of salute to her ballads, surfacing mixed feelings buried by the daily humdrum of life and decorum dictated by the society you live in ... Her concerts feel like a temporary playground for grown ups. With DJ's scratching remixes into catchy tunes, your whole body itches to move to the beat and sway to the wave of collected freedom. For that split second, you are more than yourself. Collectively YOU ARE ONE ! This is the reason why I will not hesitate to catch another one of her "live" concerts if she ever pops by the little island of Singapore! Deep down I am compelled by the urge to head to the Land of the Rising Sun and follow the whole tour of her next new album. The infectious beats and dazzling laser displays are a spectacle not to be missed in this lifetime ! Kudos to the team behind these wonderful tributes to a voice of the century... a voice that spans across the globe, the universe, the rivers, the oceans, the forest and the 7 seas. Get lost in track #6 and sing along to its lyrics if you feel like it ( unfortunately no english translation is available at the moment )

Liberte with language profundities

Take liberties with the language if you dare! Many of us develop a set of "quirky" dictionary in the course of our conversations with friends, and more friends.... Seemingly nonsensical terms find their way into the "unofficial dictionaries" of our vocabulary when they take on a perceived meaning making sense only to an individual based on their personal slangs developed over time. Here are some "quirky" new additions to my "dictionary" : -

SASHIMIFY (pron. sah-shee-mee-fai) - to beguile one unawares with nothing but the raw truth

"CHEEMIFY" (pron. chee-mee-fai) - to beat around the bush around something simple

"CHEEMITOLOGY" (pron. chee-mee-taw-le-gee)- the art of BS at its best when you are just full of "air", you airheads !

"MYEONGWOLISM" - teachings from famous korean gisaeng Hwang Jin Yi, one of the many modern heroine's who were brave enough to challenge the status quo and championed women's rights, winning many a sexist battle with brains rather than brawn.

This is all I have for now... a great many new words escape my mind for now. I shall come back and update when these random discoveries decide to rear their heads again...

Adding to this quirkdom of my personal vocabulary this 1 July 2009,
1) Kimchify - as in personify
2) ..... words escape me now but i shall be back with more quirky vocab.. until then..

Poor man's ADOBE......

The "print screen" button on the keyboard is my favourite button of all ! Just like my favourite saying "Necessity creates ability ...... in times of adversity ! The timely discovery of this humble but powerful key opened doors to a whole new world of possibilities given the luxury of time.

F1 may be the fastest
F4 may be the cutest ( in an Asian context )
F9 may be the most dreaded by students....

But! "PRT SCN" is the most formidable friend you can have if you need to whip up a design layout in a jiffy. It has served me well in strapped times like these. No $ to buy the latest ADOBE PHOTOSHOP program ? All you need is some clever manipulation of the tools in the PICTURE TOOLBOX like crop/cut/brighten/darken/resize/enlarge/reduce & there you have it. It can whip up a decent draft mock up of a product mailer, a promotional A4 size poster, a personalised greeting card, an in-house newsletter, step by step instruction manual for a new procedure you are trying to master,etc,etc... the list continues.... only limited by your imagination and purpose! So happy experimenting with this wonderful function key on your keyboard. It's time to give this often overlooked button its time of day...

Who came up with the idea of this "PRT SCRN" button on all our keyboards anyways ?
Based on this website, the inventor's name is Bowers Jr., Walter L. (from the US of A) http://www.freepatentsonline.com/EP0732648.html
Link
Bottomline - I think its an ingenious & economical way to incorporate this "photographic" function to a pc without all that fuss over installing sophisticated external camera equipment?

Balms for the weary soul @ Coffeebar K

Talk about affinity in numbers and alphabets ! The laws of attraction must have brought me to the doorstep of this lovely place again. My latest F & B hangout of choice shares the same initials as my name and its address bears the same numerals that are of importance to my very existence. The dimly lit marble tabletop makes for a charming ice breaker for the long conversation you will have with close friends or new acquaintances alike. Music in the background is just audible enough to exchange a hushed conversation. Perfect place to bring an old friend to catch up on old times. You'd be surprised how many words of truth will flow after a few drinks and the cosy atmosphere amongst plush leather chairs one would hate to get up from. The deftly hand carved ice balls are also worth the watch as the bartender conjures and shakes up a storm of cocktails based on whatever catches your fancy / mood that night. Maybe and just maybe i will feel cheeky enough to pose the impossible request by asking for a drink that brings hope to the weary heart instead of just any strong potion to numb the senses. Sometimes a plate of fruit is served in addition to a plate of crisp wasabi chips & wafer thin strips of yummy prosciutto. You can also order in sashimi and fine dishes from its neighbour restaurant - ZEN to go along with your drinks. Look forward to a night of 2-3 drinks minimum before you leave the bar completely satisfied with the A-list service from hot towels to an excellent library of every drink/cocktail imaginable.

Its latest branch in the posh Gangnam area in Seoul would be the perfect place to bring my new korean friends for a drink or two. For now, I would have to settle for the cosy UE square branch till I scrape enough moolah to experience the bar in Chiba & Seoul. Gambatte !!! http://www.coffeebark.co.jp/tenpo/tenpo_singapore.html

Ode to Hwang Jinyi

There is a saying that friends come into your life for a reason and depart when they have fulfilled their destinies in the path of your journey in life. I believe that the story of HWANG JIN YI (aka Myeong Wol) has appeared for a purpose and reason in my life right now.

Books, songs, movies, stories cross our paths everyday. Thousands of confessional works abound from commonfolk/artists of all walks of life. How can one story/song/painting/poem out of the gazillion life experiences out there touch your heart and give you an insight on how better to carry on with your journey in this wretched existence on earth.

How many times have one been blinded by impressive titles and accolades bestowed by others, succumbed to materialistic comforts and suppressed by the need to live up to the expectations of others that one forgets what they initially set out to do or what they live for! It is never easy to live the life of a true artist when human nature is prone to fall prey to the constant temptation of these superficial facades.

The poignant soundtrack in this film, the heartbreaking and universal theme of love lost, love found and love unrequited, resplendent with costumes and breathtaking scenery - all make for a great escapade in this 24 episode tale about one of the greatest gisaeng - Hwang Jin Yi, in the Joseon period (1500's) of Korea's history. Such magical wizardry conjured from the alchemy of superb scriptwriting and great acting from leading actress Ha Ji Won, leaves me in awe and lost for words. Her story might have been tweaked for the masses in this serial & the movie version of this story, yet it remains a simple but believable tale of the thankless pursuit of art which will be deeply felt by anyone who has ever tried to walk down that same path.

For now, I shall languish momentarily in this bittersweet melodrama- about love found, love lost, love in all its benevolent and cruel forms in this wretched existence we call LIFE ! and the convenient scapegoat many call FATE which is the unenviable benefactor of blame for all misfortunes rained upon us. One is reminded by the heroine that we should not be trapped by outcomes beyond our control but react with wisdom to make the best of whatever obstacles we encounter along our paths.

I shall mourn for all the things ever lost, offer utmost gratitude to all the gifts and kindness received from the wonderful sounds of music, friends and strangers, cherish any ounce of passion I can muster up to guide me through the misleading fog that clouds my judgement and unnerve me from time to time. May sunshine beckon soon !

I leave you with this hauntingly beautiful compilation of tunes from the Hwang Jin Yi-OST that opened a Pandora's Box of feelings thought long forgotten. Experience the majestic track #1, sway in harmony to the uplifting strings of track #3 (Ggot Nal) with eyes closed. Embark on that half hearted project with newfound courage garnered from track #4 (Ugh Wen) ! Get lost in a pool of the darkest melancholy and unearth sad memories to instrumental tracks #10 of (Na Buen Sa Ram) & #12 . Tug at your heartstrings ever so gently with hopeful undertones reminiscent of the silver lining in that cloud in track #14. May this soundtrack be the first of many more beautiful korean OST's I will discover in time to come.

Recharge @ THE GARDEN

Since time eternal, a garden has symbolised vitality and abundance for many... my timely visit to a restaurant with the same namesake has put back that spring in my step after a much dreaded hiatus due to a bout of "low immunity" made worse by the unpredictable weather in tropical Singapore lately.

By a stroke of luck, a good friend and I decided to tempt our jaded taste buds with the latest offerings from a health conscious eatery - THE GARDEN. Located next to Spa Botanica tucked deep in the secluded lush greenery of the hotel grounds of the Sentosa Resort & Spa, this 25 indoor seater eatery ( with a dozen or more seats outdoors ) came across as a cosy kitchen rather than a stuffy elite restaurant. The staff were attentive to every need and were well informed about the ingredients that went into each dish.

An in-house sommelier of sorts for the "choose your own" salads & fresh juices would have made the task of "conscious" salad selection less daunting for diners who are less adventurous or new to the idea of customised dining. This option would definitely make any self-confessed foodie happy to personalise a salad / juice of their choice and also meet the needs of the unfortunate few afflicted with allergies, or those who are under any special dietary restrictions.

We both ordered a salad with ingrdients of our own choice. And both concoctions arrived in a porcelain white bucket shaped bowl filled with a colorful mix of vegetable greens, cooked vegetables, grains, seeds, nuts, dried or fresh fruit. You could choose a salad dressing of your choice which came encased in a large test tube with a cork stopper. This would make a great idea to store your pre-made vinaigrette ready for use anytime you feel like tossing a a homemade salad at home/at work. What sets this salad apart from the rest is that they finish off the tossed salad with a complementing mist of either lemongrass, champagne, ginger, etc depending on the type of salad dressing chosen. I had the honey soy vinaigrette with ginger mist and my fellow gourmet diner chose the orange vinaigrette with tofu & lemongrass mist. The deep bowl not only served its purpose as a retainer for thorough tossing, it retains the wonderful aromas the final spritz of flavoured mist brings. Such an elegant touch to a simple dish. Certainly elevates the experience of enjoying a salad to a different level. Chomp your way through fresh succulent greens like the Red Chard, accented with a touch of tart with berries in the menu , complimented beautifully with the crispy flaxseed crepes which provide that savoury feel to this starter. Organic figs imparted some natural sweetness and organic walnuts gave some crunch to this medley of vegetables. The walnuts might have tasted even better if they were roasted slightly :) By the time we finished our salads, both of us felt quite full, so we settled for the "First" as our main course with the hope of leaving room for some dessert.

Check out the lunch & dusk menus, not forgetting the food photos & whet your appetite to an evening of gastronomic abundance in the simple but lush menu 'THE GARDEN' has to offer....
http://www.thesentosa.com

I look forward to they day when this concept of "choose your own salad/juice combo" can be improvised and made more readily available in our foodcourts, supermarkets & juice bars (in place of all the sugar stuffed & fat laden fast food & coffee joints rampantly raging through our tiny island). Or even brought into school/office canteens where the young can enjoy greens in a fun way & the chronic-disease prone office population have easier access to healthier food options. (Pictures courtesy of The Garden)

Here's a salute to all the salad enthusiasts in out there ! Eat your greens !!!

International flavors @ Holland V

The weekend is over and the busy week ahead looms its dreary gray in the herringbone grey skirt i picked out for Monday. Saturday was spent in "tai-tai" fashion, with a late breakfast and shopping at my favourite neighbourhood hangout- Holland Village. Out here, at this quaint little enclave, quirky meets the classy.... you can hang out from dawn till dusk given the variety of shops packed in this little street.

For breakfast, you can check out the Provence Bakery for freshly baked bread and sandwiches, famous for its melt in your mouth chocolate wassants. Its chi chi neighbour - Marmalade serves up posh nosh in the comfort of utilitarian white walls and furniture. Or get your local fix at Ya Kun cafe that serves up your half boiled eggs, complete with kaya smothered toast and strong coffee / tea to start your day with some oomph. Breko serves up some hearty American fare with sausages, baked beans, eggs & toast...

For lunch, you can check out an international array of flavours from dim sum to vietnamese, japanese, thai and local favourites. If you have some moolah to spend, take a quick 5 min stroll over to Chip Bee gardens where you can find gourmet take-outs at DA PAOLO GASTRONOMIA, organic groceries at BUNALUN and some pasta/pizzas/vegetarian fare from DA PAOLO/MICHAELANGELO's at this row of upmarket restaurants & shops.

Dinner is another mind boggling array of choices from Indian, Mexican,American and etc...

The many cafes and pubs around here make it a haven for those looking for that perfect spot to relax over something nice to drink. TCC, Coffeeclub,Tapas Bar, Indochine, 2am dessert bar, Cafe 211, Haagen Daaz, Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, Essential Brew, Foster's,etc.... and if you are lucky enough to stay around the refurbished residential flats here, you can just walk home after a night of revelry without having to worry about not getting a cab.

The 24 hour supermarket here makes it very convenient for some late night grocery shopping. I love

In short, Holland V is thee place to shop/eat till you drop. See ya folks around next week !

"Killerheels", anyone ?

Lately, some witty jewelry creations from a local brand called "KILLERHEELS" caught my eye. The 2 enterprising young ladies call themselves "tow kay neo's" (a dialect slang for "lady bosses" in Hokkien). They combine a variety of charms into coherent storylines that add an extra dimension of interest and elevate a simple bracelet, necklace or brooch into a poetic piece of art that makes them both a great conversation piece & and thoughtful provocation to the wearer. Names like "cupcake recipe"/"ice cream overdose"/ "elementary my dear watson"/"the gardening bug" never fails to make oneself sit up & inspect the charms that make up the storyline proposed in each creation. Online shopping for jewelry has never been so much fun till these modern killerbabes came along. One can't help but anticipate their next creation like you would for that next gripping bestseller from your favourite author. I bought both the "LOST IN PARIS" bracelet and necklace to match a glittering Eiffel Tower keychain I hold so dear. With this map in hand, i shall never fear getting lost in the arrondissements of Paris again...

What next ? Stay tuned to find out more about new creations that I will be adding on to my collection of dainty baubles .... I have put forth suggestions for new items to consider, for example cuff links for ladies & handphone charms. These will indefinitely make popular gift items for your closest pals for the upcoming festive season towards the end of the year..

Skincare tickled pink

The beauty industry of late has always tried to market its promises of beauty through rose tinted glass to fickle-minded customers and the latest trend seems to be associating functional products with with clever wit and thought provoking quotes with their brand, be it the product name itself or the slogans appearing on their websites or emblazoned somewhere across the packaging of a product, with particular reference to the "IT" brands of the moment - ORIGINS & AESOP .

ORIGINS labels it products with quirky names from its bath & skincare product line that suggest an idealised stress free lifestyle / afterthought, for example : - Fret me Not, Float Away,Gloomaway, Calm to your Senses, Shedonism, Peace of Mind,etc.... http://www.origins.com/about/index.tmpl

Likewise, AESOP adopts the famous quotes the likes of Mae West, Virginia Woolf,
One cannot think well, love well , sleep well if one has not dined well...

I share the exact sentiments and I believe all the foodies out there would agree too.

This trend of "picking at the consumer's mind with a twist of humour" is most evidently seen on slogan emblazoned tee shirts worldwide. It also brings to mind a similar concept emerging in local jewelry designs recently. This i shall touch on in my next entry title "Killerheels, anyone ?"

Cloudfully speaking...

It was a trip on the bus one fine day that made me look at clouds as a reflection of the human psyche. Clouds are like us in many ways. We adapt to new situations/places/people like clouds do when the wind blows them in a different direction.

We possess an array of moods mirrored by the voluminous fluffy clouds, dark and heavy clouds that threaten to shower their fury upon the land, shape shifters that resemble everyday objects, etc...

Clouds are always full of surprises. When teased with a breeze they playfully hop along with glee. When agitated by a gale, they start to change their initial form and take on a different shape. When whipped into shape by lightning and roared into submission by thunder, they let forth lashings of tears and sorrows that only the melancholy amongst us can detect.

For now, i shall leave you to ruminate over your own thoughts with the clouds...
When was the last time you stopped and took a peek at the clouds overheard ?
Go on, try it and you'll be amazed at what you might see.
They are truly wonderful creations of nature, capable of shapes and sizes only
limited by the imagination of the mind.

The picture you see here was taken right in Singapore, on my way to work one sunny day.. the clouds feel as if they are break dancing and skidding in layers across the clear blue sky. More cloud watchings abound and i shall upload them in time to come when i get a better equipped camera that can capture the different nuances of these fickle minded clouds..

Cloudfully pondering...
Yours truly
An avid cloudhunter, cloudspotter, cloud fanatic...

Hediard - for the love of CROISSANTS!

Lately i have been craving for a good croissant. An addiction i picked up after my trip to Seoul earlier this year. How does one know a good croissant when she sees one ? I only know that the first time i sank my teeth into the deceptively simple looking croissant served up in Hediard's "H" breakfast set, it was love at first bite. Crumbling at the slightest touch, buttery and suitably moist. You could enjoy it plain in between sips of freshly squeezed orange juice or add to the decadence by pairing it with generous lashings of orange marmalade or any assortment of jams you might fancy. The thought of jam oozing out with each bite is just so enticing i never fail to feel scrumptiously satisfied after devouring 2 freshly baked ones.

The 25 seater cafe is decked out in its signature red & black interior. I always make sure to ask for the seat next to the window to enjoy the natural sunlight streaming in on a lazy sunday morning. Just call at least one day in advance and the staff would be more than willing to oblige. Alternatively, you can book a table via their website online.

The shop next door carries a bewildering range of chocolates, soups, teas, coffees, jams, chutneys and wines... you can even find sugared violets here which can be added to your teas. I had the opportunity to discover a lovely wooden chest housing individually packed teas of 10-12 flavours. Elegant to a hilt when served up next to artfully displayed tea time treats, this makes for an elegant showcase for that perfect tete a tete when hosting for a small party at home / in the office. You can even find pre-packed containers of chocolate fondue mixture that can be popped into the microwave as a quick treat for two. A good dessert option thats easy to prepare after that nice candlelight dinner with that special someone in your life.

I have yet to find the time to try out its 3 course $25 lunch sets. But till then i shall continue to swing by this lovely cafe when my croissant cravings start a calling. The pictures seen here are from the website. Until i find the time to upload my photos, these shall have to suffice for now.
A Bientot & Bon Appetit !

Seoul Searching in Spring

My recent trip to Seoul gave me the perfect opportunity to do some soul searching (pun intended). Seoul is a city of contradictions with the old and new co-existing side by side. Despite the hectic pace this city is moving at, it is still deeply rooted in its culture and cuisine. Age old temples and palaces co-exist with skyscrapers in this bustling city. At noon, be prepared for swarms of hungry office workds in a mad scramble for sustenance!

Being my first solo trip abroad , I had the blessings of discovering one of the most accessible and cosiest of guesthouses. Located at Insadong - a cobblestoned quaint little area filled with art galleries, cafes and arty shops, one can easily while away a whole day just traipsing through the winding alleys on this street. YEHA GUESTHOUSE is just right behind Ssamziegil building - shopping haven for ladies out there ! A treasure trove of shops that peddle a wide variety of trinkets and accessories amidst handmade crafts. The owner Mr Cho also owns the YEHA CERAMIC shop across the street. They even presented me a lovely handmade teacup set as a parting gift. http://www.yehadoye.com/KR/guest/guest_index.jsp

Cafes are aplenty in Seoul, be it to rest your tired feet or take cover from the sudden downpour, you have much to much to choose from. Be it the upmarket and very posh PASCUCI or the commonplace STARBUCKS, COFFEE BEAN & TEA LEAF, the sheer variety of cafes out there is mind boggling. For one with a lovely european feel, visit MIAM MIAM in the Gangnam area. CAFE SOBAHN serves up house grown greens during lunch & dinner. Do not miss out on their piping hot and velvety pumpkin latte.

Insadong has many lovely cafes worth checking out - CHASARANG (aka tea of love) is a modern concept teahouse imparting a very organic feel from the wood and paper interiors and furniture. The next cafe is a traditional shop with a cute name "MOON BIRD THINKS ONLY OF THE MOON". It took me quite a while to find this hidden gem near the Yeha guesthouse. Both serve up traditional fare like jujube / citron tea with side dish of puffed rice cakes to complete the afternoon treat. For breakfast, I popped over to the "LIME TREE CAFE" serving up American sandwiches with hearty heaps of fresh veggies, notably the crunchy ice cold lettuce.

Bakeries serve wonderful croissants and dreamy creations of strawberry confections during March - the season for irresistibly sweet STRAWBERRIES. Bakery chains like PARIS CROISSANT and TOUR LES JOURS serve up scrumptiously flaky croissants. Just pop them into the oven for breakfast, add slices of fresh strawberries, finish off with a light drizzle of honey. Accompanied by locally produced yoghurt and bergamot scented earl grey tea on the side. Simply divine!

Do not miss the uber chic LEE-UM SAMSUNG MUSUEM located at the Itaewon district. Get your hands on the sleek PDA guide and discover the history behind the porcelain versus bronze treasures and modern art in this ultra modern facility.

Check out the stationery dept at the massive underground KYOBO bookstore and get caught up in the variety of locally designed creations that will leave you spoilt for choice. Handphone accessories and straps abound, notebooks of every color & print vye for your attention. I spent a good 2 hours browsing through the dept.. and left reluctantly with a bag of goodies that I am having trouble parting with. Now, which ones should i keep for myself and which ones do I give away as souvenirs ? Conundrum, conundrum, conundrum...

I definitely left my heart and soul in this bustling city of the old & new. I will endeavour to revisit this city in its splendid glory in the coming summer, autumn & winter.

Giddy on Ghibli !

Chancing upon the documentary on Hayao Miyazaki's museum opened the floodgates of memories and emotions from my very first encounter with the work of this genius animator. SPIRITED AWAY, the internationally acclaimed hit animation was a godsend creation! The graphic details in this film were a sensual and visual feast all at once and intrigued me on many levels. It was interesting to note that European architecture heavily influenced the scenes in his works, for eg. in Kiki the Witch & Howl's Moving Castle. Watch the documentary of his museum on crunchyroll.com and you will get the picture. Another genius at work is composer Joe Hisaishi, who composed the music on this film which tugs at your very heartstrings, check out the title tracks on HOWL'S MOVING CASTLE & TALES OF THE EARTHSEA. I liken watching his films to reading the works of Roald Dahl my favourite author in my childhood years. I still pick up his books now & then when i need a lighthearted moment. They seem to bring out an innate joy that one has forgotten over the years... They bring out the child in you and and momentarily free one from the shackles of adulthood. If you open your heart enough you might just break into a genuine smile of joy. Both their works will definitely outlive them in the generations to come... for now, my dream is to step foot in Miyazaki's museum and relive my childhood through his make-believe world of wonderful journeys!

MISIA - 8th world

After a long hiatus from Japanese music, I am glad to have picked up from where i left off with MISIA's latest album - "8th world". Familiar rhythms and melodies bring to mind images of a breezy drive on a fair day with billowy clouds in the clear blue sky follow suit as exemplified in track # 13. For that much needed respite from the crazy hustle and bustle of city life , soothe your frazzled nerves with track #12 and begin on a journey to retrieve those lost dreams and hopes buried deep under years of mindless occupation.

Last but not least, track #6 is a good attempt at healing hearts worn out by blinded faith. One must give credit to the soulful voice of this incredible songbird whose voice spans over the great expanse of an evergreen forest, over the oceans and skies to touch the deepest strings of one's heart. ver since her soulful rendition of the song "EVERYTHING" in a popular jap dorama caught my ear, there has been no turning back from the music she brings coz very trip out of HMV would never be complete without a DVD/VCD/CD/Single from her. It is with utmost regret that moi missed her last concert in Taipei, I am determined not to miss the next one out of Japan so my eyes and ears are peeled to her website for now...

COACH me away....

Taking a break from gushing about food, its now time to indulge in my one other passion - FASHION. Coach bags have always fascinated me and this time its the legacy stripe collection that has stirred my interest in this brand again. The lovely combo of navy, forest green, sky blue, maroon, ecru, tangerine, leaf green stirs something in me and gets my brains juices going. The possibilites to fleshing out this current infatuation with this color palette is endless. I have thought about interpreting it into multicolor tassels, ipod pouches, nail art, pretty stationary like paperclips and etc............. this would make a nice print for a wellington boot in shiny vinyl or great for a teenage party dress collection.

The other collection that caught my fancy is the BLEECKER TATTERSALL plaid. It just makes me want to put out a whole babywear & kidswear collection with this lovely plaid combo.

ok enough crazy ideas. i should be taking time to realise these crazy ideas in my head.
adios for now and till my next blog

COACHfully yours :p

organic cafe - BUNALUN

Nestled among the slew of gourmet cafes in chip bee gardens opposite holland village, the only thing that makes me come back time & again is the freshly baked CARROT CAKE. a must try ! go early coz it sells out pretty fast ! will upload pics of it soon. for now. for now i shall leave you to imagine what it's like dining in at this uber chic organic produce retail shop cum cafe is like. (counter top space for 8 only, they dun take reservations, only walk in )

you can also grab this treat and many other tasty goodies at their counter in takashimaya basement. yuuuummy !

a cake & drink would set you back about $12 - 15 per person. main courses start from $18 and above. the ginger peppermint tea is really refreshing.

the cloudy pear juice looks inviting amongst the organic fruit fridge compartment. the light aroma of those fruits really whet up an appetite for a freshly squeezed vitamin booster !
try the beetroot + red apple + orange combo! the tangy sweetness from the apple & orange balance out the earthy taste of antioxidant packed beetroot !

Food for Thought - a lovely respite from work

Dear Folks out there !

This is a rare gem of a cafe right in the heart of town. Attached a glimpse of the lovely pictures found on their website. Great work on the photos! This would make a perfect place to your next birthday celebration, linger over breakfast on Sat mornings or just simply chill out with a gossip session cum cake fest on lazy afternoons.

What struck me was not only the homey interior but the warm, friendly service of both the counter & wait staff. No "hoighty-toighty"devil may care attitudes here, just genuine smiles from the heart with each & every recommendation. Talk about making or serving food from the heart ! This place seems to be doing something right for a change.

The cake stands at its shop front and a signboard on the sign saying "support aunty talents" caught my eye one night while i walked past this dreary building with its row of art supplies shops. Its too easy to miss this the shop with the narrow display window .It looks just like a slice of cake if you can imagine the blueprint of the shop's floor plan. One would miss it if the handwritten signboard was not put up outside the shop.

Forget about cold sandwiches or the cream laden soups in Raffles City basement, make room in your stomachs for some wholesome grub at this cosy cafe (for a good cause too! read their home page intro). Perfect alternative to its teenybopper neon colored neighbour in the next street which serves up a menu of "fried what have yous"that are oh so frighteningly artery clogging.

This cafe has been operating away quietly away without much fanfare which was such a pity!!! The all-day-breakfast menu and cake is worth checking out alas they only open from 9am onwards (last order 9pm) and are closed on Sundays. Perfect hangout for students with its friendly cafe prices & perfect grub for ladies who don't have time to lunch. Soups are surprisingly yummy without any addition of cream. Salads are super fresh (house special with the warm corn is just satisfying on a bed of watercress rather than just mixed lettuce) . The ciabatta bread used for the sandwiches are baked fresh daily by the in house chef Mr David Heng himself !!!

The salads are absolutely refreshing. The house special has bits of lemongrass mixed into the warmed up corn & fresh tomato chunks laid on a bed of watercress and romaine lettuce. The chicken caesar is a must try! Oh so tender chunky slices of chicken (moist and not dry at all) ,with a perfectly sliced & a poached egg(with semi-runny yolk) on a bed of romaine lettuce makes for a decent meal at lunch. Regular portions go from $5-10 depending on type of salad and fills up one big plate that will serve 2. So if you are dining alone, order the combo set (1/2 salad + 1/2 soup) for the best of both worlds.

They don't, and I REPEAT, don't! stinge on the ingredients that go into the soup at all & i have witnessed it with my very own eyes on countless visits while sitting at the counter. It's chockful of wholesome ingredients and herbs which give that extra depth and dimension to these soups made from scratch. Often the herbs give a new twist to an otherwise run-of-the-mill flavors.
Shitake mushroom soup is a must try ! Carrot pumpkin soup for that extra bit of sweetness. The garlic and potato chowder is wholesome comfort food without being overpowering - i am a big garlic fan ! The flavours in the soups are wholesome yet subtle. Soups change daily so keep your eyes on the menu board above the counter.

I am so looking forward to devouring the various "aunty's cake offerings". I had the luck of trying out a freshly delivered "durian mousse cake" today (Tuesday). Blissfully light on the palate but packing enough pungent oomph and kick to this local favourite. I was surprised I could still polish off the giant slice clean with a cup of chamomile tea even after a full lunch combo of salad+soup+sandwich.

The "RED VELVET CAKE" uncannily stained a blood red with a secret ingredient caught my eye ! Such a decadent looking cake reminiscent of Victorian opulence. I personally think this would make a great wedding cake the likes of those shown in the Martha Stewart wedding magazines! I overheard one patron guessing "beetroot". My take would be pomegranate. Are we right by any chance? ( i discovered much later it was another ingredient but i shall not tell, just guessing is reason enough to try the cake for yourself right ?

The mango cheesecake is a must try!!!!!!! Fresh mango chunks with the right amount of tart mango pieces to balance the yummy cheese layer and finally the crunchy biscuit base.

The carrot cake is a classic yummy treat. Chocolate Maltese juicy with banana chunks. The old school orange chiffon cake is deceptively simple, beckoning you for that next mouthful with the teeny bits of orange zest inside this fluffy yet deliciously moist concoction.

Take some time out for yourself and chew each mouthful thoughfully over lunch (if alone, the bar counter seats are comfy & laidback, exchange a quick quip ot two with the kitchen/counter staff).
Do share the sandwich sampler platter with a good pal or two. Strictly no complaints about work here please. Don't disturb the peace-loving ambience this cafe has. It does deserve a bigger crowd with the quality of its food and prices. But then again if it was packed to the brim with people, it would lose that nice artsy feel to this quaint little haven.

HAPPY EATING !!! ( check out this place fast before it becomes too overcrowded after word gets round. Saturdays are packed so do call in to reserve a table). Water is self service & pleazzze proceed to order your food from the counter. Some of the proceeds go to the tuition fund managed by the "School of Thought" upstairs helping needy students. I am happy to know that some measure of what I spend here goes to a good cause at the end of the day!

Kudos to the chef - David Heng and the whole kitchen crew, without their tireless dedication and generous spirit we would not have such personable service & lovely, nutritious food on our tables daily. Reservations for groups are recommended ! Great joint to bring your little ones for some wholesome yummy grub on a lazy Sat afternoon too. BON APPETIT !

cookie hedonism

I first came across this as the V tea room years back at the Esplanade and am delighted to find it revamped under the new name of "The Cookie Museum". This place has the makings of a must stop shop in singapore with all its opulent Victorian interiors and plush sofas, alongside its true blue creations like the "hae bee hiam / laksa / dried scallop / nasi lemak" flavours. This is what i call true fusion cuisine!

The fact that its conceived and made right in singapore makes me feel proud to present it as a souvenir to my foreign guests before they leave these sunny shores. Also a perfect gift to bring along if visiting friends abroad too! Finally, a presentable "made in singapore" product worth carting along the flight even if you have to deal with the hassle of hand carrying these fragile delicacies.

However, one lamentable fact is that the flower infused cookies are fashioned in a "dome shaped" which makes it hardly palatable as the mini bite sized samples. I was told the shape was necessary to seal in the floral flavours but maybe it can be improved in terms of making it more bite-size friendly before the flavour explodes in your face and undoes itself with its current portion size.

A cookie tasting session is like tasting wine with al the wonderful flavours bursting through your mouth with each & every taste. I would dare say some of the spicier savoury cookies would go very well with some chilled white wine. The cookies taste somewhat better when shaped into rough flat pieces. My personal favourite is the limited edition "le royale" which is currently sold out. I had the chance to get my hands on one tin before xmas and it was just addictive with the cinnamon beckoning with every bite and the butterscotch honeycomb bits lingering on yr tastebuds crying out for more ( for the record i finished the tin in 2 days flat all by myself ) . Look out for special editions every now & then like on Mother's Day, CNY, X'mas,etc.....

The service is generally excellent except for some staff who treat you like "dirt" which is such a turnoff whenever stop by the shop with colleagues & fellow foodie friends. despite several visits, some staff still give me the same snooty attitude as it they were selling PRADA or GUCCI (totally uncalled for if they don't fear the power of bad press via word of mouth). several friends have been offended by this standoffish attitude that they vowed never to step in ever again. luckily some are decent enough to give you the time of their day & serve you with sincerity and in all earnesty. though i will never doubt the quality of the cookies and food, the service attitude of some have to be kept in check. never be afraid to ask for another salesperson to serve you lest you choke midway due to pure disgust. part timers there generally fare better than the old timers. i wont mention names. you shall find out for your good selves.

All in all, i think the cookie museum is a great international franchise opportunity for Singapore to spread a little bit of its local tastes abroad. For one i would like to see a small counter in the DFS dept or a cafe at the transit terminals @ our lovely airport should entice enough weary lady travelers looking for that perfect food gift to share with friends and family alike. A welcome break from all that commercial chocolates flooding the duty free shelves.

Check out their website but its currently under construction when i last checked in Jan 2008.

Too many ideas for this shop flowing through my head now. A penny for my thoughts. Haha you would have to meet me in person then. Hahaha
